Sign In & Drop Off
When you arrive, your child will be greeted in our lobby area. Artists are welcomed into their studios 5 minutes before the official start time of class.Note that we can not accommodate early drop-offs and the front door may remain locked until 5 minutes prior to the class start time.
Timely Arrival
We strongly encourage timely arrival. Our classes begin promptly, with the first 10–15 minutes dedicated to introducing the day’s lesson and materials. Late arrivals will miss critical instruction and may find it difficult to catch up.Pick Up / Departure
Artists will be ready for pickup in the lobby area at the end of their class session. If your child is older and you would like to authorize them to leave on their own after class please let us know beforehand.Late Pickup
We understand that delays happen. However, if your child is picked up more than 10 minutes after class ends, a late fee of $25 will be charged. -
To help kids build confidence, focus, and independence we kindly ask parents and caregivers to remain outside the studio work areas.
However, if your artist is feeling anxious you may choose to wait for them the bench in our lobby area.
Note that we do not have any closed doors in the studio and your child may step out for a quick check-in at any time if they need reassurance!
If your artist is having difficulty with separation we are happy to work with you to make them feel more at ease:
-
Drawing Practice or Catch Up - 5 minutes
We kick off most class sessions with a few minutes of drawing practice or a collaborative studio project—using interesting objects and visual references and providing paper and drawing materials to spark creativity as friends trickle in.
Demonstration - 10 minutes
Once all participants have joined or five minutes have passed (whichever comes first), our teachers lead lively, 10-15 minute demonstrations introducing the materials, concepts and techniques of the day’s lesson.
Note that our projects typically extend over multiple sessions so we may be introducing something new or starting a second phase of work building on the previous week.
Working Time - 35 minutes
This is when the real fun starts! We distribute materials and give artists up to forty minutes of focused creation time, while our teachers circulate and help out.
Clean up - 10 minutes
With ten minutes remaining, we pause to organize our work, tidy our studio and wash our hands, ensuring every session ends on a clean and cheerful note!
-
Every class series is designed to give artists the opportunity to explore a wide range of materials and fine art techniques in an age appropriate way.
What We Create
We focus on creating 4-5 pieces across a variety of media and themes each series and always include:
Something sculptural exploring 3d construction using cardboard, clay, wood, wire, plaster or recycled materials
Painting with acrylic, tempera or watercolors on paper, canvas or wood panels
Drawing with charcoal, graphite, india ink, and pastels
Printmaking and/or mixed media exploring block printing, silkscreen, collage and other mixed media techniques
We focus on building artistic confidence through creative exploration and experimentation, not perfection or rigid skill building. Our goal is for every artist to feel proud of what they’ve made and how they’ve grown as artists.
Bringing Art Home
Artists will bring home work as it is completed, usually beginning in week 3 or 4 of the series. This gives plenty of time for pieces to be refined (and fully dry) before they make it home.
-
At Corner House Studio, we pride ourselves on creating a safe, supportive, and inspiring environment for every young artist.
Our small group classes include between 6-10 students with one or two teachers (depending on class size). This allows for a teacher:artist ratio of 1:7 or better, ensuring each child receives plenty of individual attention and encouragement.
-
Our talented teachers are all practicing artists who hold BAs in Studio Art and LOVE KIDS!
They bring a wealth of artistic knowledge, creativity, and care to their teaching. Just as important, they are kind, patient, talented, and smart—dedicated to making each child feel confident and inspired.
All staff members are trained in safety protocols, positive behavior management, and our studio’s unique, confidence building approach to creativity.
-
We encourage creative freedom—which often means getting a little messy! While we provide smocks, we recommend dressing your child in clothes that can handle paint, glue, and other materials.
-
We know that life gets busy and kids sometimes need to miss a class. In the case of missed classes you may be able to schedule a make up class, or we will do our best to catch artists up in the next session.
Note that class fees are for the entire series and we do not offer refunds for missed classes.
Make Up Classes
Makeup sessions are available based on space availability in other classes.
You may schedule up to 2 makeup classes per 8-week series.
Makeups must be used during the same series (they don’t roll over), ideally within the same week as the missed class.
To Request a Makeup Class
Email makeart@cornerhouse.studio with:
Your child’s name
The date/time they’ll miss (or missed) class
Your preferred makeup day(s)
We cannot guarantee make ups will be available but will do our best to find a time that works for your family!

-
🏥 Illness
If your child is not feeling well, please keep them home to rest and recover. This helps protect the health of our entire studio community. If a child is dropped off and showing signs of illness (ex. coughing, fever, sneezing) we may keep the artists out of class and request an early pick up.
🚨 Emergency Preparedness
In the unlikely event of an emergency evacuation, our designated meeting location is Montclair Park, one block from the studio. We practice safety protocols as part of our staff training to ensure a calm and organized response in an emergency situation.
-
We believe in creating a positive inclusive environment where every artist can thrive creatively. Our behavior policy exists to keep our community respectful, safe, and focused on creativity and fun.
All artists are expected to:
Participate actively and safely in studio activities
Respect others, teachers, materials, and space
Keep hands and bodies to themselves
Follow directions from teachers and staff
Use kind language and actions
Addressing Disruptive Behavior
If an artist’s behavior makes it hard for others to feel safe, focus, or enjoy the program, we will work with families to find solutions. However, if disruptive behavior continues after support and communication, your child may be dismissed from the program.
Any behavior that puts others at risk—such as hitting, kicking, pushing, or making threats—may result in immediate removal from the program.
-
To ensure a positive experience for all, we require that our youngest artists meet two key readiness criteria:
Drawing Development: Children should be past the scribbling stage and beginning to create intentional shapes and forms.
Level of Independence: Artists must be comfortable taking care of necessities like using the bathroom and participating in class without a parent present.
If we determine a child is not quite ready for the program, we may remove them from the series and offer a refund for any remaining classes. We always encourage families to try again in 6–12 months when their child may be better prepared.
-
By registering for any of our programs, you grant Corner House Studio permission to use photos or videos taken during class for marketing and promotional purposes. If you prefer for your child not to be included, please let us know.
